History of Chew Jetty

 big thanks for my beloved readers that always have a time to visit my blog. So for today i want to share with you guys about history of Chew Jetty Penang!

    Chew Jetty is one of six wooden Clan Jetties in George Town on Penang. These jetties feature buildings and are currently inhabited by members of Penang’s Chinese immigrant community. Chew Jetty is easy to reach (its near the car ferry terminal to Butterworth), its open from 09:00 to 21:00 every day and admission is free.

    Chew Jetty was one of 5 wooden jetties constructed in 1888 as part of a development project on the quay side in George Town. 2 other wooden jetties were built in the same area in the 1960s. One of the jetties burnt down which means there are are now six remaining.

    Over time different Chinese family groups, known as clans, took over control of each of these jetties and fees needed to be paid to the clan in charge to use the jetty. As well as a Chew Jetty, which is controlled by the Chew Clan, there were also jetties controlled by Lim, Tan, Lee, Yeoh, and Koay clans.

    The late 19th Century was a period of often violent rivalry between different immigrant groups for control of economic resources in Penang and the jetties were at the forefront of these conflicts.

    The Chew Clan still occupies the Chew Jetty although it no longer used for loading and unloading cargo having been superseded by the large commercial sea port nearby. You can’t unload large freight ships on a small wooden jetty. Chew Jetty is now a tourist attraction with the clan members using the lower part of their houses as shops.

    The Chew Clan’s continued survival as a community on the Jetty is uncertain. The city government does not recognise their rights as land owners, indeed the residents are not taxed by the local government as technically speaking they do not reside on Penang Island but live on the water.

    There is a Taoist temple just inside the entrance to Chew Jetty, which is principally dedicated to the God of Heaven, referred to by various names including Tian and the Jade Deity. The God of Heaven is the most important of all the deities worshipped in the Taoist Religion. There is also a temple at the end of the main jetty dedicated to the Taoist Sea Deity, Haisen, which in Taoist belief is one of a large number of more minor gods.

    George Town in Penang has literally hundreds of wall murals and other forms of street art scattered across the city. The street art movement in Penang started in 2012. Before 2012 there hardly any graffiti on the walls of George Town, let alone street art, and only 6 years later urban art is now as much of a feature of George Town, and as much of a tourist attraction, as the historic buildings. Street art has also caught on elsewhere in Malaysia as consequence with murals now adorning the walls of Ipoh’s Old Town and Kuala Lumpur.

    Street art in Penang began when the Penang Tourist Board commissioned then unknown artist Ernest Zacharevic to create murals on 6 walls in places of historical importance in George Town for the George Town Festival. Ukranian born Zacharevic’s career started with this lucky break and he gone to create street art projects in urban settings around the world as well as art in galleries and other indoor spaces.

    Ernest Zacharevic’s style and motivation is distinctive. He is not a Lithuanian version of British street artist Banksy. Banksy’s work tends to have an overtly political message and Zacharevic’s isn’t, and if it had been it is difficult to imagine him having been commissioned to create wall murals in a country such as Malaysia, known for its socially conservative values.

    Instead, Zacharevic’s work is focused on art as a feature and a reflection of the local community. The subjects of his work are the people from the locale where he is painting and he uses existing features of the landscape, and draws on the history of the area, to create his work. He does this literally and metaphorically.

Penang Hill is a hill resort comprising a group of peaks near the center of Penang Island, Malaysia. It is located within the Air Itam suburb, 9 km (5.6 mi) west of the center of George Town. Penang Hill is also known by the Malay name Bukit Bendera, which actually refers to Flagstaff Hill, the most developed peak. One of the peaks is known as Strawberry Hill, which was also the name of a house owned by Francis Light, founder of Penang colony.

A number of hills make up Penang Hill, with the highest point being Western Hill, which stands at an altitude of 833 m (2,733 ft) above sea level. Penang Hill is a hilly, forested area that stands out from the lowlands of Malaysia due to its elevation and greenery. The area was used as a retreat during the British colonial period and is now a popular tourist destination because of its history and heritage.

The top of Flagstaff Hill, the most developed tourist area, is accessible via the Penang Hill Railway from its base station at Hill Railway Station Road. To date, this funicular railway system is the only one of its kind in Malaysia, transporting over a million visitors to the top of Penang Hill as of 2014.

Penang Hill is part of Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve, recognized by UNESCO as the third Biosphere Reserve in Malaysia listed in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR).

    The State of Penang, one of the most developed and urbanised Malaysian states, is located at the nation's northwest coast along the Malacca Strait. Unlike most Malaysian states, the history of modern Penang was shaped by British colonialism, beginning with the acquisition of Penang Island from the Sultanate of Kedah by the British East India Company in 1786.Developed into a free port, the city state was subsequently governed as part of the Straits Settlements, together with Singapore and Malacca; the state capital, George Town, briefly became the capital of this political entity between 1826 and 1832.By the end of the 19th century, George Town prospered and became one of the major entrepots in Southeast Asia.

    During world war II, Penang was conquered and occupied by the Japanese Empire from 1941 to 1945. At the end of the war, Penang was also the first state in the Malay Peninsula to be liberated by the British, under Operation Jurist. The Straits Settlements was dissolved in the following year and Penang was merged into the Federation of Malaya. In spite of a secession movement within Penang, the merger with Malaya went ahead and the federation attained independence from the British Empire in 1957.Malaya later evolved into the present-day Malaysia in 1963.

    Following the revocation of George Town's free port status in the 1960s, the state suffered economic decline and massive unemployment. The state government at the time led a push to reorient the economy towards hi-tech manufacturing, successfully recovering Penang's economy and lending the state its moniker the Silicon Valley of the East. Growing recognition of George Town as a bustling tourist destination, particularly since the city's inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, also boosted the state's services sector, and today, both the manufacturing and services sectors are the two strongest economic pillars of Penang.
